Cannabinoids for pain

People have used cannabis as medicine for thousands of years, but understanding how it works for pain relief is a relatively recent phenomenon because our laws were not conducive to studying the plant's clinical usage.

Cannabis gained legitimacy as a valid medicine in 1992, when researchers discovered the body's endocannabinoid system.

That's a good thing, too. Many people prefer the side effects of CBD and THC for pain management over the side effects and sometimes addiction of pharmaceuticals. Some people report that cannabinoids work better.

The potential was clear when this extensive review (not so easy to read) was published by the National Institute of Health in July of 1996; however, there was no availability of legal, medical cannabis in the United States at that time. It would be a few months later, in November, that California voters would approve a ballot initiative, making it the first state to legalize medical marijuana.

This article is written for scientists and almost impossible to read for the rest of us, but even scrolling through it makes an obvious point. While some states, like North Carolina, still resist legalization, the incredible potential for this natural medicine has been well known for a long time.
