Cannabis Facts You Didn’t Know

(Some of these might surprise you. Some might just make you nod knowingly.)

At PhenomWell, we talk about cannabis every day — but there’s always more to learn, even for those of us deep in the plant world. So we pulled together a few of our favorite facts that don’t always make it into everyday conversation.

Whether you're new to hemp or a long-time connoisseur, here are some nuggets you might enjoy:

🧬 1. Your body is wired for cannabis.

The human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a vast network of receptors that helps regulate mood, sleep, pain, appetite, and memory. The ECS responds to cannabinoids like CBD, THC, and CBN, which is why so many people feel balanced and relaxed after using them. It’s not magic — it’s biology.

🔥 2. THCA won’t get you high — until it’s heated.

On its own, THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is non-psychoactive. It only becomes THC — the compound responsible for cannabis’s euphoric effects — when it’s heated. This process, called decarboxylation, is what makes flower effective when it’s smoked or vaped.

📜 3. Hemp has been used for over 4,000 years.

Ancient Chinese texts describe hemp cultivation as early as 2700 BCE. It was used for rope, paper, textiles, and even medicine. In the U.S., George Washington grew hemp at Mount Vernon. Cannabis culture might be evolving fast, but the plant has always been part of the story.

🍬 4. Edibles affect your body differently than smoking.

Even seasoned customers are sometimes surprised by how distinct the edible experience can be. When you eat THC, it’s processed through your digestive system and liver, where it converts into a different compound: 11-hydroxy-THC.

This version of THC can be stronger and longer-lasting than what you feel from smoking or vaping — which is why the effects of edibles often come on later but hit deeper.

Everyone’s metabolism is different, and factors like what you’ve eaten that day can also play a role. That’s why we always say: start low, go slow, and give it time.

🧪 5. Different cannabinoids, different effects.

Cannabis contains dozens of cannabinoids, each with its own role. Here's a quick breakdown of some that come up in our store conversations:

  • CBD – A go-to for calm and balance, many use CBD for stress and inflammation support. It’s non-intoxicating and widely loved.
  • CBN – Often found in products for sleep, CBN is mildly psychoactive and may help extend restfulness through the night.
  • CBG – Gaining attention for its potential anti-inflammatory effects, especially for gut health and discomfort. Some customers say it supports focus, too.
  • THCV – This lesser-known cannabinoid isn’t intoxicating and is being studied for its role in attention, mental clarity, and appetite control. It’s a favorite for people who want a clear head with a little support.
  • Delta 9 THC – The classic. This is the primary psychoactive compound found in most flower and edibles, used for everything from deep relaxation to creativity — depending on strain and dose.

🌼 6. Terpenes shape your cannabis experience.

That citrusy, piney, or earthy smell? It comes from terpenes, the aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and other plants like lavender, pepper, or lemon peel). But terpenes don’t just smell nice — they influence how a strain makes you feel.

  • Limonene may elevate your mood
  • Myrcene tends to relax
  • Caryophyllene is spicy and may help with stress and inflammation
The combination of terpenes and cannabinoids is often called the entourage effect — where all the parts of the plant work together.
