CBD and the opioid crisis

The opioid crisis in America was already a problem, and it got worse during the pandemic. 

Some people suggest that cannabis could help with the addiction, and a few research studies have addressed this possibility.

This study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, says that CBD has the potential to help with opioid addiction -- at least enough to warrant more studies. 

There's also some indication that states with legal cannabis have less opioid abuse than prohibited states. 

Other studies show results that are more skeptical.

This study finds that there's no connection between legal cannabis and opioid addiction, and this one suggests that cannabis could make the opiod problem worse. 

This systematic review looked at nine different studies and concluded that more research is necessary.

So the research is limited and mixed, and the landscape is changing.

While cannabis proponents may argue that it's helpful in decreasing opioid abuse, cannabis opponents may argue that it's not helpful. One day there may be enough data for researchers to reach a consensus and communicate clearly with the public about how cannabis can or cannot help with our country's opioid problem.
