D9: When old is new and new is old
First it was CBD. Then Delta-8. Now it’s Delta-9.
How does that work? Everybody knows that Delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid most prominent in marijuana, is illegal in North Carolina (and 13 other states).
But is it?
The 2018 Farm Bill allows for hemp with less than .03% Delta-9.
It’s almost as if it took two years for somebody to pull out a calculator.
Here’s the discovery: A gummy that weighs 2.5 grams and contains 10 milligrams of Delta-9 is less than .03% Delta-9, by dry weight. A 10mg edible is an average serving size of Delta-9 THC.
While the flower is still against the law, here and at the federal level, it looks like the Farm Bill accidentally legalized edible Delta-9 products in the entire country.
For a couple of years, labs have been converting CBD to Delta-8. Delta-8 is an isomer of Delta-9. It’s has a similar effect, at about half the strength. Last year, companies were rapidly making new Delta-8 products.
People have different tastes, and we think there will be a place for a wide variety of cannabinoids.
But in recent months, companies seem to be most excited about producing new Farm Bill compliant Delta-9 products.
One of our favorite suppliers, Patsy’s Candies, recently announced they are discontinuing all Delta-8 chocolate. Now all their products will contain a 1:1 ratio of CBD and Delta-9 THC. We’ve been carrying the D9 chocolate pieces and taffy for a few months now. Soon we’ll have the peanut butter chocolates and the larger bars with D9.
It’s almost like the cannabis industry has come full circle, wherein the old is new and the new is old. That’s fine with us. We love exploring the next old/new thing.
