A word about COVID.
Rowan County's vaccination rate is currently at 31.1%, far below the state average of 43.5% and the national average of 49.7%.
As a result, the CDC puts Rowan County in the red zone for coronavirus transmission, which is the highest, most dangerous level.
It's estimated that 98.9% of all hospitalizations are unvaccinated people.
We had high hopes of returning to a version of normal and are deeply disappointed at our area's lag in vaccination.
We were loving life without masks. It's not only more comfortable, but it's great to see real faces that are not on Zoom. And business has been better since we last took them off. Pandemics are not good for the economy, especially for brick and mortar stores, and we were optimistic that the COVID spread would continue to decline.
However, that's not the case. According to the new CDC guidelines, we live in an area in which masks are now recommended. The Delta variant spreads 60% more rapidly than the previous Alpha variant, and it can be carried by people without any symptoms -- so we want to take every precaution to prevent any spread.
We're committed to well-being and safety, and our store is quite safe. The risk of virus spread goes up when the number of people in a room goes up, and we rarely have more than one or two customers in the store at one time. It's much different from a restaurant, convenience store, classroom, or waiting room.
That said, with the Delta surge currently underway in our area, we're going to follow the CDC guidelines and return to masking for now. If you don't have a mask with you, that's fine. We'll put a box outside the door.
