How to Tell If Your THCA Flower Is Actually High Quality
(And Why It’s So Hard to Tell Just from a Label)
In the world of THCA flower, there’s a lot of noise — and not much transparency.
You’ve probably seen jars with flashy branding, high THC numbers, and prices all over the map. But if you’re wondering how to separate the good from the not-so-good (especially when shopping online), you’re not alone.
Let’s take a look at a few things that really matter when it comes to quality — and a few that don’t.
🌿 1. It’s Not All About the Number on the Label
A high THCA percentage looks impressive, but it doesn’t always mean you’re getting the best experience. A lot of flower in the 25–30% range will hit hard — but potency is just one part of the picture.
Other factors, like terpene content, freshness, moisture level, and cure, affect how a strain smells, tastes, and feels in your body. A 27% flower with great terps will often feel better than a 33% strain that’s dry and harsh.
👁️ 2. What You See Matters — But Can Be Misleading
Frosty, trichome-covered buds are a good sign, but they’re not everything. Sometimes, growers use light tricks or camera filters to make their flower look shinier than it really is.
Look for:
- Good trim (not leafy, but not so over-trimmed it looks artificial)
- Healthy color (vibrant greens, oranges, purples — not brown or dull)
- Visible crystals (without needing to zoom in)
- No excessive stem or seed (unless it’s a value-priced smalls batch)
✂️ 3. Machine Trim vs. Hand Trim — It’s Not Black and White
Some of our best-selling premium strains are machine-trimmed. Does that mean they’re low quality? Not at all.
Hand-trimmed flower can look more boutique, but machine-trimmed buds — when done well — can be just as good. You might see a little more stem, but if the genetics, grow, and cure are solid, you're still getting great value.

"Smalls" or "mediums" are sometimes seen as second-tier, but that’s not necessarily true. These are often just the smaller buds from a high-end batch — same genetics, same grow, just different size.
If you're looking for top-shelf effects at a better price, smalls can be a smart pick.
