The Cannabis Twins

Notice how different people in the same family can be very different?

However, we often participate in guilt by association.

That is, if we know one person in a family, we sometimes form opinions or invent ideas about another person in the same family — even if we don’t know them. We’re human. We have flaws. So we sometimes gossip and judge.

That’s similar to what happened with the Cannabis Twins: Hemp and Marijuana.

The push to criminalize Marijuana began in the 1930s and reached it’s conclusion, as a widespread crime, with the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 and the ensuing war on drugs.

But Marijuana’s identical twin, Hemp, got caught too.

Even though they are very different, lawmakers thought they looked alike and should be treated the same way. They got put in jail together.

Before 1937, Hemp was a major American agricultural crop — since the colonial days — and it was used to make stuff.

The fact that hemp fibers also have superpowers did not help its case.

Hemp fibers are so strong and versatile that, in the 30’s, they threatened the lumber industry and the newly emerging plastics industry.

So until the Farm Bill of 2018 made Hemp federally legal, the plant was mostly punished for its twin’s crime, but also because it was so good at so many things.

We’re just happy Hemp was finally set free and that today’s technology is causing a whole new group of products to emerge. At PhenomWell, we love seeing this industry develop anew, with scientists developing new products and new combinations of cannabinoids.

We don’t have any hemp flooring or rope in stock, but we do have plenty of gummies, tinctures, carts, smokeable flower, soft gels, and chocolate.
