Decarboxylation is the process of heating THCA to a specific temperature, which causes the removal of a carboxyl group and the conversion of THCA to Delta-9 THC. Delta-9 THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis that is responsible for its euphoric effects. It is found in raw and live cannabis, but it is not psychoactive in its raw form. This is why decarboxylation is an important process when it comes to consuming THC and other cannabinoids that are not psychoactive in their raw form.
Did you know that the total THC content of a cannabis product is typically measured by adding the Delta-9 THC and THCA percentages and multiplying the sum by a conversion factor? This conversion factor accounts for the fact that THCA and THC are not equally psychoactive. The conversion factor used is typically around 0.877, which means that THCA is about 87.7% as psychoactive as THC.
